Add media downloads

Business Catalyst End of life announcement - find out more details.

You can let visitors download media such as PDF files, Word documents, videos, and music. Unlike regular files uploaded using FTP or the File Manager using the Media Downloads to upload files has certain advantages like:

  • files uploaded as media downloaded items can be secured so only authenticated site users can access them, see this article for more details on securing items
  • when displaying these files you can better control the way they are listed - show their file size, file type icon and other options
  • you can display an item for a certain period of time and set it to expire at a certain date

The most basic workflow consists of the following steps:

  1. Add media files to the Media Downloads module.
  2. Insert links in a page for downloading the media.

Add media files to the Media Downloads module

The Media Downloads module acts as a container for media files for download.

  1. Select Modules > Media Downloads, and click Add Media Download.
  2. Enter a name for your media download and select its file type.

The name is used as the link text on your pages.

  3. Click Save.

Note: You must save the settings before you can upload a file.

  4. Click the Upload link and select the file on your computer.

Note: For the best experience using Business Catalyst we recommend creating a maximum of 1000 media downloads. For more details please see the Business Catalyst system limits .

Insert the download links in a page

  1. Open the page in editing mode by selecting Site Manager > Pages and clicking the page in the tree view.
  2. Place the cursor in the content editor where you want the download link or links to appear in the page.
  3. In the Modules tab of the Toolbox found on the right of the editor, select Media Downloads.
  4. Select the download link or links you want to display, and then click Insert.

Business Catalyst inserts a placeholder tag. When you publish the page, links for downloading the media files replace the placeholder tag.

  5. Click Publish or Save Draft.

Customizing how the media download looks like

When it comes to listing the media download items to a webpage you can customize the Media Downloads List layout - you can display an icon's description, file size, icon, last update date, add it to your wishlist button and many more.

This module has only one layout.

Known limitations

Every media download item you upload can be as large as 250 MB. If you need to store larger files you can break down a file in multiple archives and upload it in parts.
