Adding a menu to your website

Updated on 20-October-2016 at 10:16 AM

Business Catalyst offers a few menu types, but the best type to use is the one that produces clean code, which is good for SEO, and that is the HTML Only menu type.

The workflow for adding a menu consists of the following steps:

  • Create a dynamic menu module.
  • Insert the module
Here's an easy tutorial on this topic: Creating a SEO friendly dynamic menu. You can achieve the same result with Dynamic Menu V2.

Create a dynamic menu module

  • Select Site Manager > Menus, and click Add Menu.
  • Specify a name for the menu module and click Next.
  • Specify the properties of the first menu item and click Save Item.
  • For details, see the tool tips next to the options.
  • Click Add Item to create more menu items.
  • Define the look of the menu by clicking Menu Look. Specify the properties and click Save.
  • Define the look of the menu items by clicking Items Look. Specify the properties and click Save.

Note: This dynamic menu module is completely reusable, meaning that you can add it to multiple pages in your site.

Insert the menu in a page

  • Open the page in editing mode by selecting Site Manager > Pages and clicking the page in the tree view.
  • Place the cursor in the content editor where you want to insert the menu.
  • In the Modules tab of the Toolbox found on the right of the editor, select Site Modules > Menus.
  • Select your menu module from the list and click Insert.
  • Business Catalyst inserts a placeholder tag representing the module. Example: {module_menu,1630715}. When you publish the page, the menu replaces the placeholder tag.
  • Click Publish or Save Draft.

Note: You can also add a menu to a template. See Working with Templates

Modify a menu

  • Select Site Manager > Menus, and click the menu in the list.
  • To edit a menu item, select it from the tree view and make your changes. Click Save Item after modifying each item.
  • To modify the overall look of the menu, select Menu Look. Click Save to apply your changes.
  • To modify the overall look of the menu items, select Items Look. Click Save to apply your changes.

Note: Modifications are immediately reflected on any page that contains the dynamic menu module.
